Meanwhile, Kitty enters labor and bears a son. Levin works enthusiastically with the peasants on his estate but is frustrated by their resistance to agricultural innovations. Visiting Anna at Vronsky's estate, Dolly finds her own drab life preferable to the formal luxury and decadence of Anna's. The novel details Konstantin's difficulties managing his estate, his eventual marriage, and his struggle to accept the Christian faith, until the birth of his first child.

In addition, all is not quite well with Anna and Vronsky. And I love this greyness of each character, so lifelike and full. Imagine my childish glee when I saw this portrait used for the cover of this book in the edition I chose! One's choice

However, a chance sighting of Kitty in her carriage makes Levin realize he still loves her. She will be no one's wife, she will be lost! Levin reflects again that the meaning of his life lies in the good that he can put into it. Part 7 Kitty gives birth to a son. I don't want to prove anything; I merely want to live, to do no one harm but myself.

Petersburg Anna Karenina book seek a cushy job and to beg Karenin to grant Anna the divorce he once promised her. Of course, being a good-hearted man, he liked men rather than he disliked them, and so too with the peasants.

The wife had discovered that the husband was carrying on an intrigue with a French girl, who had been a governess in their family, and she had announced to her husband that she could not go on living in the same house with him. Tolstoy uses this part of the novel to express his pacifist principles.

Part 3[ edit ] Portrait of a young lady so-called Anna Karenina by Aleksei Mikhailovich Kolesov,National Museum in Warsaw Levin continues working on his estate, a setting closely tied to his spiritual thoughts and struggles.

Vronsky, whom Tolstoy originally modeled on the Romantic heroes of an earlier age of literature, has something of the idealistic loner Anna Karenina book him. He liked and did not like the peasants, just as he liked and did not like men in general. Anna's confusion and anger overcome her and, in a parallel to the railway worker's accidental death in Part 1, she commits suicide by throwing herself under the carriage of a passing train. Meanwhile, Stiva acts as a matchmaker with Levin: he arranges a meeting between him and Kitty, which results in their reconciliation and betrothal.

He accompanies Stiva to a gentleman's clubwhere the two meet Vronsky. His desperate broken-heartedness is simply tragic and I feel more for him than I do Anna. She will be no one's wife, she will be lost! Part 7 Kitty gives birth to a son. Anna Karenina is filled with major and minor characters who exist in their own right and fully embody their mid-nineteenth-century Russian milieu, but it still belongs entirely to the woman whose name it bears, whose portrait is one of the truest ever made by a writer.

But Anna gives the book its name, and her plight spoke more to me than the philosophical dealings of an insecure and soul-searching Russian landowner, and so her story comes first.

Levin is initially displeased that his return to his faith does not bring with it a complete transformation to righteousness.

Anna Karenina by Tolstoy

Levin tries to overcome his jealousy, and briefly succeeds during a hunt with Veslovsky and Oblonsky, but eventually succumbs to his feelings and orders Veslovsky to leave in an embarrassing scene.
